PORCELAIN TEETH VENEERS:
Veneers are thin facings that are bonded over natural teeth in order to achieve a very high level of esthetics. They are usually done in order to make teeth look lighter in color, but can also be done to make teeth look straighter.
Porcelain teeth veneers, and indirect tooth veneers, are made in a lab, and are bonded to the teeth.
Composite veneers, or direct toot veneers are bonded to the teeth as well, but are done using conventional composite filling material in the dental office.
WHAT IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY??
Cosmetic dentistry deals with any type of work that is done to enhance or alter a person's dental appearance. Often times this type of work is not covered by insurance, but it can be very well worth it to the patient.
A new smile can change a person's whole outlook on life, and can increase self confidence and improve your life dramatically!
Two examples are shown below.
In the first example, the patient has a chipped front tooth in the picture on the left. On the right, it shows the tooth repaired with a porcelain veneer.
In this next example, the picture on the left shows a patient with a space between the two front teeth, known as a diastema. On the right, it shows the same patient who has had porcelain veneers placed on both front teeth to close the gap.
There are some dentists who do ESTHETIC work (such as veneers, invisalign, tooth whitening) exclusively, and they likely have taken advanced classes in the field.
SO HOW DO YOU FIND A DENTIST WHO DOES EXTENSIVE COSMETIC WORK?
Getting a dentist referral would be ideal. There are many dentist who are not comfortable doing extensive makeovers, and they can refer you to someone who would.
If that is not possible, when you call or see a dentist, you can ask to see before and after pictures of some of the cases the provider has done. If they truly do focus on ESTHETICS, they will surely have pictures to show off their success.
Cosmetic dentistry is an ever expanding field, and can do wonders for your smile and self esteem! With the type of technology and materials available, it often can be done very quickly and look extremely natural.
WHAT PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE?
DENTIST TOOTH WHITENING:
There are two basic types of TOOTH WHITENING or TOOTH BLEACHING. Dentist tooth whitening, which is done in the office, such as BRITESMILE, or at home whitening; a procedure which is done at home with bleaching trays, made by the dentist. A porcelain tooth veneer is a superficial layer of material which is placed over the teeth. If your teeth have intrinsic stains and cannot be whitened, veneers present another option.what is cosmetic dentistry
These can be done directly or indirectly.
The pictures below show how an indirect porcelain veneer is done.
INDIRECT TOOTH VENEERS:
This is when the teeth are prepared in the office, an impression is taken, the veneers are made at a lab, and then they are CEMENTED onto the teeth. Probably the most commonly used material is PORCELAIN. These also can yield incredible results, but because the veneers are made by a third party, matching one porcelain teeth veneer to an adjacent natural tooth may be more difficult if the natural teeth have a lot of shade variations.
Lumineers are a type of veneers which are done with little to no tooth preparation; therefore do not require anesthetic, temporary veneers (while the real ones are being made), are reversible, and now come with a lifetime warranty. They are made with a special type of porcelain called cerinate, which can be bonded to teeth, porcelain, or metal.
DIRECT TOOTH VENEERS:
These are done in the dentist office, and are done by roughening or removing part of the outer facing of the tooth, then placing COMPOSITE (or other) material over the fronts of whichever teeth are being veneered.
This procedure can yield AMAZING results. Because the dentist is placing it directly in the office, the shade and variations thereof are literally ENDLESS, and many times the results appear as natural as any other tooth in the mouth.
Getting more involved, TOOTH COLORED/COMPOSITE FILLINGS:Composite fillings have become the material of choice for most dental practices, and they can be done to look very natural. Often times it is difficult for dentists to tell where the filling ends and the tooth begins.what is cosmetic dentistry
Teeth with LARGE filings that are going to be removed for ESTHETIC PURPOSES, may be better off CROWNED. Gold is a wonderful restoration, but unfortunately, it is not the most esthetic.
Even porcelain fused to metal or gold crowns can be made to look more natural by replacing them with full porcelain crowns or LAVA crowns, as shown below.
The pictures below show a traditional porcelain fused to metal crown on the left, and on the right, that same crown is replaced with a LAVA crown.
Full porcelain crowns can look beautiful, but are not always the best option for back/posterior teeth.
